Sony Loses Australian Copyright Case Federal Court of Australia Judge Ronald Sackville found that mod chips do not violate Australian laws forbidding circumvention of "technological protection measures." There law is simmilar to the DMCA. Sackville said the technology mod chips disable doesn't constitute a "technology protection measure" under the law because it also prevents legal activity, including the playback of imported games and personal backup copies of games. I wonder if the same rational should cover systems that defeat region coding of DVDs?!!!
On Trial: DMCA "The American Civil Liberties Union filed a lawsuit on Thursday in an attempt to overturn key portions of a controversial 1998 copyright law. The suit asks a federal judge to rule that the Digital Millennium Copyright Act (DMCA) is so sweeping that it unconstitutionally interferes with researchers' ability to evaluate the effectiveness of Internet filtering software."
iVillage Renounces Pop-up Advertising, its about time someone caught on. I for one am pretty sure the is a good legal argument to be made that pop-ups are a violation of the Computer Fraud and Abuse Act...but thats for another time. Now if some one would do the same with SPAM!!! Anyone know what the effectiveness of these technologies are, seems they can't be very good with such a high rate of disfavor among consumers!!!

Sun To Push StarOffice For Apple's OS X, "I don't want to sell StarOffice for OS X," Siress, Sun's senior director of desktop marketing solutions said. "I want Apple to bundle it. I'll give them the code. I'd love it if I could get the team at Apple to do joint development and they distribute it at no cost--that it's their product. Nobody makes a product more beautiful on Apple than Apple."

Internet Law Program,Last week the Berkman Center held their second annual Internet Law Program, an intensive course in (surprise) internet law and developments. You probably didn't spend the time/money to attend, but the topics covered are interesting enough (to me anyway) to check it out even second-hand. Dan Gillmor attended and posted his notes: Day 1, Day 2, Day 3, Day 4, Day 5 part 1 and Day 5 part 2. Donna Wentworth was there, trying to record the seminar in real-time; hopefully she's learned her lesson. There is tons of interesting stuff in there - it's worth your time to read through if you have any interest in the subject matter at all.

Rep. Boucher Outlines 'Fair Use' Fight, moving to strengthen "fair use" provisions under federal copyright law, US Congressman Boucher said he is introducing a bill that would essentially restrict the record industry from selling copy-protected CDs. Very good review of his proposal and its differences from current law! Also on the subject check Janis Ian, famous songwriter and artist, on free music downloads, the music industry and the evils of the RIAA in this article. Also see Courtney Love's speech at Salon on basically the same.
Gnutella Pioneer Gene Kan Dies. Kan, 25, rose to prominence online as one of the most articulate spokesmen for the Gnutella file-swapping community at the height of the Internet's love affair with peer-to-peer software. Kan died June 29.
