Poll: Bush ratings fall to new low

Poll: Bush ratings fall to new low: "President Bush's job performance ratings have fallen to new lows, largely a casualty of the Iraq war, ABC News reported Tuesday. According to an ABC News/Washington Post poll fewer than half of U.S. respondents, 47 percent, approve of Bush's overall job performance, while 50 percent disapprove. Bush's rating for handling the situation in Iraq registers a 58 percent disapproval. His handling of the prison abuse scandal gets a 57 percent disapproval, and his stewardship of the U.S. economy gets a 54 percent disapproval. The president's approval ratings, the lowest since the war in Iraq, match Gerald Ford's in the spring before his narrow loss in the 1976 presidential election.
The poll was conducted by telephone May 20-23 among a random national sample of 1,005 adults. The results have a 3 point error margin."

Brian Wilson for new London festival

Brian Wilson for new London festival: "THE SOUTH BANK BEACH BOYS star BRIAN WILSON heads the list of performers at the HEROES & VILLAINS festival on LONDON's SOUTH BANK later this year. The singer premiered his lost classic 'Smile' in the UK earlier this year to huge acclaim, watched by the likes of Paul McCartney, Roger Daltrey and Paul Weller. The concept album was originally intended for release in 1967, around the same time The Beatles put out 'Sgt Pepper'. However, Wilson had a breakdown and the album was never finished, giving it almost mythical status amongst fans. As previously announced on NME.COM, the legend is to perform a residency at London's Royal Festival Hall, his fourth since early 2002. The originally announced four-night run has now been extended to six for Heroes & Villians. The event, taking place between July 24 and August 7, aims to showcase artists who have 'consistently dedicated themselves to an area of song-writing and music production that is both up-close personal and outrageously ambitious'. Other artists performing include French duo Air, cult songwriter Lee Hazlewood and a two-night stint from Badly Drawn Boy. The shows are :
Brian Wilson (24, 25, 27, 28, 30, 31)
Spiritualized/Pere Ubu/David Viner (August 1)
Air (3)
Lee Hazlewood & Morcheeba (4)
Badly Drawn Boy (6/7)"

At its 4 p.m. screening In Competition at the Palais, the movie occasioned an enthusiastic standing ovation -- onlookers placed it at 15-20 minutes -- punctuated by cries of 'bravo!' The crowd included a phalanx of Endeavor agents, led by Ari Emmanuel, along with Mick Jagger, Daryl Hannah and a smattering of French stars and industry insiders. 'It was the longest standing ovation I've seen in over 25 years,' said Harvey Weinstein, whose Miramax Films funded the project over the objections of parent company Walt Disney Co. and who has an exec producer credit on the film, along with Miramax's Agnes Mentre. The explicit scenes are cut with scenes of the bands playing live. Winterbottom told The Guardian: 'I had been thinking for a while about the fact that most cinematic love stories miss out on the physical relationship, and if it is indicated at all everyone knows it is fake.'Books deal explicitly with sex, as they do with any other subject. Cinema has been extremely conservative and prudish. I wanted to go to the opposite extreme and show a relationship only through sex. Part of the point of making the film was to say, 'What's wrong with showing sex?'' The film was recently premiered at the Cannes Film Festival"

SSRN-Copyright's Communications Policy by Tim Wu

SSRN-Copyright's Communications Policy by Tim Wu: "This paper suggest that the main challenges for 21st century copyright are not challenges of authorship policy, but rather new and harder problems for copyright's communications policy. Since its inception copyright has set important baselines upon which publishers and their modern equivalents compete.business. As the pace of technological change accelerates, copyright's role in setting the conditions for competition is quickly becoming more important, even challenging for primacy the significance of copyright's encouragement of authorship. The study of copyright's communications policy has both a descriptive and a normative payoff. First, it helps us understand both the existing copyright code and the history of 20th century copyright. Second, it helps us ask whether copyright is in line with other important goals of national communications policy"

Slashdot | Freecache

Slashdot | Freecache: "'Finally the solution for slashdotting, or just the poor man's Akamai? Freecache from the Internet Archive aims to bring easy to use distributed web caching to everyone. If you've a file that you think will be popular, but far too popular for your isp's bandwidth limits, you can just serve it as http://freecache.org/http://your.site/yourfile instead of the traditional http://your.site/yourfile and Freecache will do all the heavy lifting for you. Plus your users get the advantage of swiftly pulling the file from a nearby cache rather than it creeping off your overloaded webserver.'"

Yahoo! LAUNCH - News: Radiohead, Pixies, Cure & Flaming Lips Rock Coachella Fest

Yahoo! LAUNCH - News: Radiohead, Pixies, Cure & Flaming Lips Rock Coachella Fest: "The glorious return of reunited alt-rock legends the Pixies, Thom Yorke's triumph over a severe throat infection (which had almost led to the cancellation of Radiohead's Saturday headlining appearance), Flaming Lips frontman Wayne Coyne's attempt to crowd-surf inside a giant plastic beachball, and a two-hour, festival-closing set of greatest hits by the Cure were just some of the highlights of the fifth annual Coachella Music & Arts Festival, held this past weekend in Indio, California. Not even the punishing, 106-degree desert heat, which could have made Coachella a true endurance test for even the most enthusiastic music fan, was enough to stop more than 100,000 people from flocking to this year's festival of nearly 90 alternative, hip-hop, and electronic artists. In fact, attendance was actually up 30,000 from last year, making the 2004 Coachella the most successful yet."
