Kazaa Betamax Defense, Reports From The Courtroom

Kazaa Betamax Defense, Reports From The Courtroom: "'CBC is reporting that Kazaa, mentioned in a previous Slashdot story has mounted the 'Betamax defence.' The prosecution claims Sharman Networks does not enforce their agreement which stipulates users cannot share copyrighted material.' Also following the case, Dan Warne writes 'Australia's APC magazine is publishing a daily blog from the Kazaa trial proceedings in Sydney's Federal Court. It has some details not reported elsewhere, like the music industry piracy investigation chief apparently losing a $100 bet on the first day of the trial. More seriously, blogging journalist Garth Montgomery says the court heard evidence that Kazaa's software already had the ability to block copyrighted tracks built in, despite Sharman's protestations to the contrary.'"

Paralyzed Woman Walks Again

Paralyzed Woman Walks Again: " 'It's been promised for years, but it's just become a reality. Stem cells taken from cord blood have enabled a paralysed woman in South Korea to walk again for the first time in 20 years. The details are on the Sydney Morning Herald Site which requires registration, but can also be seen on the World Peace Herald. Too late for Christopher Reeve, but not for the thousands of new injuries worldwide each year or the millions of paralysed people from other diseases in the world.'"

Federal Judge: Keystroke Logging Isn't Wiretapping

Federal Judge: Keystroke Logging Isn't Wiretapping
: "'A federal judge in Los Angeles has dismissed wiretapping charges against a California man who used a hardware keystroke logger to spy on his employer, SecurityFocus is reporting. The court ruled that the device doesn't violate the federal Wiretap Act because it only intercepted signals off a keyboard cable, not an interstate network. The government is asking for reconsideration. Ironically, the judge relied in part on the Scarfo precedent, which allowed the FBI to use such a keylogger without a wiretap warrant.'"

MPAA Sues Movie-Swappers

MPAA Sues Movie-Swappers: "'The MPAA has filed a first wave of lawsuits against individuals they say are offering pirated copies of films using Internet-based peer-to-peer file sharing programs.' From the article: 'The MPAA said it would also make available a computer program that sniffs out movie and music files on a user's computer as well as any installed file sharing programs. The MPAA said the information detected by the free program would not be shared with it or any other body, but could be used to remove any 'infringing movies or music files' and remove file sharing programs.'"

ABC affils balk at 'Ryan' airing

ABC affils balk at 'Ryan' airing: "ABC affils balk at 'Ryan' airing Fearful of the FCC crackdown on indecent broadcasts, at least 19 ABC affiliates plan to pre-empt the network's unedited broadcast of the film 'Saving Private Ryan' at 8 p.m. tonight. The pre-emptions come despite the network's decision to warn viewers during each commercial break about the graphic violence and language in Steven Spielberg's Oscar-nominated World War II epic. ABC has aired 'Ryan' twice before without any pre-emption, to commemorate Veterans Day in 2001 and '02, though some stations cited past complaints from viewers that they also factored into their decisions. Station groups that plan to cancel 'Ryan' at all of their ABC-affiliated stations include E.W. Scripps, Citadel Communications and Belo Corp. Other pre-empting stations are owned by Cox Communications, Hearst-Argyle, Pappas Telecasting and Tribune Broadcasting."

Music Downloading not Entirely to Blame

Music Downloading not Entirely to Blame: "'A recent article in The Economist discusses the proximate causes for the decline in music sales. Of some note is this quote in the article: 'According to an internal study done by one of the majors, between two-thirds and three-quarters of the drop in sales in America had nothing to do with internet piracy. [...] Other explanations: rising physical CD piracy, shrinking retail space, competition from other media, and the quality of the music itself. But creativity doubtless plays an important part.' The article discusses in some depth the short-term viewpoint of the majors and why that is likely to be the dominant problem, not the internet bogeyman.'"

John Peel: 1939-2004

John Peel: 1939-2004: "JOHN PEEL: 1939 -2004 When John Peel’s sad, sudden death at the age of 65 was announced today (October 26) BBC Radio 1, the station that had been his home for five decades, broke with programming and played The Undertones ‘Teenage Kicks’ – his all-time favourite song.

It was a fitting tribute to a man whose dedication and unerring passion for all that was fresh and vital and youthful and vigorous about music saw him reject the dictats and mores of broadcasting to pursue a singular path launching the career of hundreds of bands, and soundtracking the youth of millions of music fans.

Born John Robert Parker Ravenscoft in Heswall, near Liverpool, in 1939, Peel was the son of the wealthy owner of a cotton mill. He was sent away to boarding school in Shrewsbury, which he hated, an ordeal made bearable when he first heard Elvis Presley singing ‘Heartbreak Hotel’.

'Everything changed when I heard Elvis,' he said. 'Where there had been nothing there was suddenly something.'

In 1959, after National Service, Peel moved to America where Beatlemania soon took hold. The Liverpool connection helped Peel land a spot as DJ on WRR radio in Dallas. He moved back to England in 1967, where he first joined Radio London, before moving to BBC Radio 1 for its launch. He was to remain with the station for the rest of his life, the only original DJ.

His style was immediately different to other presenters. He played the records from start to finish without interruption – which later became useful if you wanted to tape the tracks - providing an informative commentary for listeners. During his early period, Peel was a friend and supporter of some of the biggest names in rock. Marc Bolan, David Bowie and Jimi Hendrix all recorded Peel Sessions and Peel famously once showed up on Top Of The Pops miming mandolin for Rod Stewart on the chart-topping‘Maggie May’.

As the 70s progressed, Peel’s tastes evolved. He was in the vanguard of punk, pushing the sounds of The Ramones, The Clash, The Undertones, The Buzzcocks and the Sex Pistols, then latterly Joy Division. In the 80s, he kickstarted the careers of New Order, The Fall, Smiths and any number of other acts you care to name. We would never have heard the Pixies or Pulp or The White Stripes if it wasn’t for John Peel.

As the years rolled on, the scope of his radio show widened. He moved between gum-bleeding German techno, world music and the occasional Roy Orbison hit with ease – even if it was sometimes a little taxing for his legions of fans. Until recently, a place on his annual countdown of the best singles of the year – Peel’s Festive 50 – was a much sought-after berth for bands on independent labels.

In recent years, Peel built a new army of fans. His award winning ‘Home Truths’ programme on BBC Radio Four grew into a must-hear for middle-aged listeners in middle England. And his spots on the BBC’s ‘Grumpy Old Men’ – a series featuring irritated men of a certain age riling against the things they found most absurd about modern life – were frequently the funniest and most telling.

Balding, a little plump, a devoted father, grandfather and husband not to mention a big fan of genteel radio series The Archers, Peel kicked open the door for people like Steve Lamacq and Zane Lowe, letting the mainstream programmers see that an audience existed for music that was not always a chart fixture.

His influence is immeasurable.

John Peel often told the story hearing ‘Teenage Kicks’ for the first time. He was driving in his car listening to the song on a demo tape. He was so overcome by the tune that he pulled onto the side of the road to have a cry.

There are thousands of people across Britain today who will have had a similar experience on hearing of his untimely death.

Paul McNamee"

i don' want to imagine a world where kids will no longer be able to dig through bins of peel sessions...

U.S. album sales in a groove

U.S. album sales in a groove: "The U.S. record industry showed continuing renewed health through the first nine months of the year, with album sales rising 5.8% during that period, according to figures released Wednesday by Nielsen SoundScan. The American public bought 463 million albums in the first three quarters of the year versus 437 million during the same period last year. The ongoing upswing in sales, which began in the fourth quarter of 2003 after a downturn that lasted nearly three years, is encouraging as the music business approaches the December holidays, with its slate of major album releases. In the wake of last year's iTunes boom and an ongoing crackdown on illegal downloading by the industry, the digital music business continued to explode. Consumers purchased 94 million digital tracks through September, compared with just 19 million in the first nine months of last year."

While the FCC does have jurisdiction over TV transmissions, transmissions are not at issue here. The broadcast flag limits the way digital material can be used after the broadcast has already been received.'

SpaceShipOne Captures the X Prize

SpaceShipOne Captures the X Prize: "SpaceShipOne's second flight was a success, the craft successfully launching from mothership White Knight and returning safely about 20 minutes later. If the flight is certified to have reached the X Prize's target height (62.5 miles) before its safe return, it will win the $10 million purse, and more importantly attain the prestige of repeatably (if only technically) reaching space, on a budget embarrassingly smaller than NASA's. Today's flight was manned by 51-year-old test pilot Brian Binnie (rather than Mike Melvill, who piloted last week's trip), and according to spectators present at both launches seemed even smoother than last week's flight. The view from the sidelines was incredible. flapjack submits a link to CNN's coverage of the launch (which lists a claimed height attained of 368,000 feet), noting 'Interesting to note that a majority of its funding ($20-$30 million) was put up by Microsoft's own, Paul Allen.' White House Lied About Iraq Nuclear Programs

White House Lied About Iraq Nuclear Programs: "'This New York Times article reports that in 2002, the Bush Administration's assertions that Saddam Hussein was rebuilding his nuclear weapons program were based on evidence that was doubted by the government's foremost nuclear security experts. Specifically, aluminum tubes most likely meant for small artillery rockets were interpreted by the administration as parts for uranium centrifuges.' In a nutshell: while Bush, Cheney, Rice and Rumsfeld were announcing to the American public that these tubes were slam-dunk evidence of Iraq's nuclear ambitions, they already knew that there was completely overwhelming evidence that the tubes were just for artillery rockets (as Iraq said) and that the tubes were totally unsuitable for use in centrifuges."

If this ruling is allowed to stand, it will allow one-sided EULAs to force the waiver of the rights of First Sale and Fair Use. This, combined with the Supreme Court's recent assent to perpetual copyright, a few decades at a time, will destroy any semblance of balance in U.S. copyright law. The Induce Act: Innovation Under Attack

Induce this!!!: "Senator Orrin Hatch's new Inducing Infringement of Copyright Act (S.2560, Induce Act) would make it a crime to aid, abet, or induce copyright infringement. He want us all to think that the Induce Act is no big deal and that it only targets "the bad guys" while leaving "the good guys" alone. He says that it doesn't change the law; it just clarifies it. He's wrong. Right now, under the Supreme Court's ruling in Sony v. Universal (the Betamax VCR case), devices like the iPod and CD burners are 100% legal -- not because they aren't sometimes used for infringement, but because they also have legitimate uses. The Court in Sony called these "substantial non-infringing uses." This has been the rule in the technology sector for the last 20 years. Billions of dollars and thousands of jobs have depended on it. Industries have blossomed under it. But the Induce Act would end that era of innovation. Don't let this happen on your watch - tell your Senators to fight the Induce Act!"

Technology consultancy Jupiter Research said in its annual report on Tuesday that in 2009 European music fans will buy €836 million euros ($1.02 billion) worth of music in the form of digital downloads and subscriptions to internet radio services. At that level, digital music revenues will account for roughly 8% of Europe's estimated €10.2 billion ($12.56 billion) music market. The study does not take into account the surprisingly successful market for mobile phone ring tones."

MovieLink 2004's Top Film Download Service, So Far

MovieLink 2004's Top Film Download Service, So Far: "'The NPD Group has released some research on the fledgling pay digital movie download services. Numbers for the first half of this year show MovieLink as number one with a third of total users followed by MovieFlix with 13% of the market. It's a very small market though, with purchases equalling only 0.3% of the total movie market (and nowhere near the numbers of those trading on the free P2P services). Also of note, 80% of users are male and the top films purchased are sci-fi and fantasy.'"

Cheap Ipod Idea

i was just inspired by "hmurchison" on this board, who said "For 2005 I'd like to see Apple go here. $99, 512MB USB based Flash card with store support."

so i got to thinking...is it possible. because i certainly think there is a sub $100 market now that apple is missing out on. anyway i looked. seems that it might just be!

according to Steves Forums the drive used in the mini is similar to a compact flash. "It is an OEM (Black/White label) drive. And as such, is customized for that companies application at their request. Also at their request I cannot divulge what is different. There are no CF compliance labels on it since it is NOT Compact Flash org complaint. Only our retail package (blue label) drives are trully CF Compliant as indicated by the CF mark on them. Hence, they will work in all cameras that are also CF complaint.
William F. Heybruck, Ph.D.
Senior Applications Engineer
Hitachi Global Storage Technologies"

it is likely that apple has it slightly modified to keep people from moding them ala rio or MuVo2.

anyway point is the mini is nearly designed for cf as it is. a 512mb cf is about $65 when bought by a consumer. the ipod mini's hitachi microdrive is about $360. both obviously are much cheaper bought oem in volume. but still thats 5.5 times as much for the microdrive as a 512mb flash!

assuming the drive is the major cost (as it seems to be) and since the mini is $250, divided by the 5.5 and you got less than a $50 device!!! but still all other costs do not drop proportionately like, 3rd party licences, same size box and cost for other components, screen, wheel, battery, etc... but you can double the cost of the estimate above and still end up under $100 with the same profit margin as the ipod mini!!!

seems to me it would be totally doable with very, very minor modifications to the existing ipod mini. same form factor, same features, same os except maybe just a firmware update to read an unmodified cf compatible card. and there you go the sub $100 ipod mini capable of using the itms is within reach! maybe they can call it the ipod micro!!!

Skin Flick Pioneer Dies

Skin Flick Pioneer Dies: "Skin flick pioneer Russ Meyer, producer-director behind such films as FASTER, PUSSYCAT! KILL! KILL!, passed away Saturday at his home in the Hollywood Hills. He was 82. A spokeswoman said he dementia and died of complications of pneumonia. Meyer's films tended to focus on large-breasted women rather than hardcore sex itself. He worked on at least 23 movies during his career, including BEYOND THE VALLEY OF THE DOLLS, which was co-written by film critic Roger Ebert."

Are poker ‘bots’ raking online pots?

Are poker ‘bots’ raking online pots?: "Pull up a chair at a friendly poker game in a buddy’s den and you probably know the other players and have some idea of their card-playing weaknesses – like Big Al's habit of fingering his chips when he's itching to raise. But take a seat at a table in one of the rapidly multiplying online card rooms and there's no telling who’s sitting to your right – or if the player is even human."

Windows Upgrade, FAA Error Cause LAX Shutdown

Windows Upgrade, FAA Error Cause LAX Shutdown: "'The recent shutdown of LAX due to an FAA radio outage was apparently caused by a Windows 2000 integration flaw, possibility related to an old Windows 95 bug. An article at the LA Times claims that the outage was caused by human error, as the system will automatically shut down after 49.7 days (related to this Windows 95 flaw?), and a technician didn't reboot the system monthly as he should have. This happened after an upgrade from Unix to Windows. I don't think blame should be assigned to the technician who missed the task; rather, it seems a gross oversight for the FAA to guarantee that such a critical system will crash after only one missed maintenance task. Who's really at fault?'

MPAA applauds Calif. piracy law

MPAA applauds Calif. piracy law: "California Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger signed into law Tuesday a bill that makes it a crime to mass-distribute a video, music or other file distributed on the Internet without including information that links the file to its source. The law, SB 1506, requires a person transmitting copies of movies, music or games over the Internet to more than 10 people to include their e-mail address or face a misdemeanor charge that could bring up to a year in jail and $2,500 in fines. The law was patterned after an existing state law that requires people to publish their 'true name and address' on a video, DVD or music CD when it is being distributed so that others will know whether it is legitimate."

last i checked the 1st A didn't require you to flash id before exercising it! wow, thats some shit!!!

A Wi-Fi/VoIP Phone Booth In the Burning Man Desert

A Wi-Fi/VoIP Phone Booth In the Burning Man Desert: "'I, (of EFF/ClariNet/rec.humor.funny) along with Brent Chapman (Majordomo/Building Internet Firewalls) and the satellite dish of John Gilmore (EFF/Cygnus/Cypherpunks/etc.) put together an engaging hack -- a battery-powered free phone booth using 802.11, VoIP and a satellite IP uplink. This was placed in the desert at the Burning Man arts festival deep in the remote Nevada Black Rock playa, exactly where you wouldn't expect a working phone booth to be. With cheap VoIP people were able to call all over the world. The reactions of people to such incongruous technology were great fun and emotional as well. There's a page about the phone including details of building it and live experiences including totally non-gratuitous photos of naked people using technology. (There, that ought to stress-test my new server!)'

Johnny Ramone of the Ramones dies at 55

Johnny Ramone of the Ramones dies at 55: "Johnny Ramone, guitarist and co-founder of seminal punk band the Ramones has died. He was 55. Ramone died in his sleep Wednesday afternoon at his Los Angeles home surrounded by friends and family, his publicist said. He had been fighting a five-year battle with prostate cancer. A tribute concert and cancer research fund-raiser was held Sunday in Los Angeles to celebrate the band's 30th anniversary. It featured performances from Los Angeles punk band X, the Red Hot Chili Peppers, Henry Rollins and others. Johnny Ramone was one of the original members of the Ramones, whose hit songs 'I wanna be sedated' and 'Blitzkrieg Bop,' among others, earned them an induction into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2002."

Windows Fails 8% of the Time

Windows Fails 8% of the Time: "A Journal du Net article reports that about 8% of Windows sessions require a machine reboot. The relevant quote (translated from french) is: 'The average rate of failures requiring a system reboot has been measured at around 8% per session. This number varies widely depending on the version of Windows. Windows 2000 has a failure rate of 4%, and NT4 is at 3%, whereas Windows XP is close to 12%.' The study was originally made by Acadys and Microcost and gathered data from 1.2M machines belonging to about one thousand companies over a period of one month in seven different countries."

Flat panel technology is quickly becoming bigger, better, and more affordable, which will allow for all sorts of fun ways to transport your domicile to wherever tickles your fancy. Wind Power Falls Under $0.01/kwh UPDATED

Wind Power Falls Under $0.01/kwh: "Colorado State University's Rocky Mountain Collegian reports that, 'as of June [the price of wind power] dropped to 1 cent per kWh.' Brilliant takes RIAA to court

Brilliant takes RIAA to court: "Brilliant Digital Entertainment and its subsidiary Altnet sued the RIAA and several online companies Wednesday for alleged patent infringement. The suit, filed in U.S. District Court in Los Angeles, asks the court to stop the RIAA, Overpeer Inc. and Loudeye Corp. from using Altnet's patent for 'identifiers,' a way of tagging content with a unique tracking number. Loudeye, which acquired Overpeer in March, is accused of infringing on the patent by distributing fake or damaged files in an effort to thwart illegal peer-to-peer music trading. The RIAA and the other defendants, including several current and former RIAA executives, were not immediately available for comment."

this should prove an interesting fight. wonder what the prior art is like?!?

Satellite Pics Going Dark?

Satellite Pics Going Dark?: "'Defense Tech reports the U.S. Gov't. is proposing to exempt satellite images from the Freedom of Information Act (FOIA). The proposed exemption has already passed the Senate and awaits House/Senate conference committee this month. Not only does the exemption apply to Gov't. satellite images, but also any commercial satellite images the gov't buys and 'any... other product that is derived from such data.' That would include maps, reports, news footage, etc. This would heavily impact news gathering and probably the income of commercial satellite operators - who would only be able to sell to the U.S. Govt. And how big is the deficit already?' peter303 writes with a more optimistic story in USA Today ' about building and launching a satellite for as little as $65K,' as long as you can squeeze it into a 4 inch-cube."

that top bit is petrifying but the bottom bit reminds me of another article i read on creating satellites out of the mac cube.

The Last Party: Britpop, Blair and the Demise of English Rock

The Last Party: Britpop, Blair and the Demise of English Rock
: "This is a book that attempts to cover the music scene in Britain in the 1990s, contrasting the rise and fall of an indigenous rock music movement with the rise of Tony Blair. The author chooses to focus on a group of bands - Oasis, Blur, Suede, Elastica and Menswear - that were all part of the same incestuous group (The lead singer of Elastica went out with both the lead singer of Suede then Blur for instance). The book is full of minute detail - he said, she said about each other, dates and locations for early gigs, chart positions and such like. I can only say that I think only a real fan would be interested in most of this detail - and if you were a dedicated fan you would probably know most of this anyway. The author's attempt to make links between the rise of Blair and the development (and fall) of Britpop is tenuous. It is true that there was interaction between the Blair camp and bands like Oasis and Blur, but they feel like adjuncts to the story. Yes, Blair and his people co-opted the rise of `Cool Britannia' to their cause, and Britpop was a part of Cool Britannia idea, but the author doesn't make a very strong cause for the association with Blair being a major part for the sell-out, and therefore end, of Britpop. It is as though the author wanted his book to be taken seriously, and thought a book 'just about pop music' wasn't enough, so he threw some politics in."

on my to read list. despight the review above more and more i am runnning in to discussions of "cool britania" and the blair-blur-oasis connection!!!

Universal3D vs. Real Open Standards

Universal3D vs. Real Open Standards: "'Back in April, Slashdot reported the announcement of a Universal 3D File Format by Intel, Microsoft & others - to be 'as open as MP3'. Of course, that's not all that open. And this turns out to be the sneaky part. There is a real open standard already - X3D is ISO-ratified, royalty-free, and has multiple open source implementations. U3D is 'going to be submitted to ISO' - one day - but right now they're talking to ECMA, which allows royalty-bearing patents. I found this article by Tony Parisi, co-chair of the X3D Working Group a fascinating insider's picture of the standards wars, along with insights into what it takes to release an online game, what really killed VRML, and why open standards do (and don't) matter. I mean, a royalty-bearing, pseudo-open universal 3D format from Intel and Microsoft? Sorry, guys. That trick doesn't work anymore ;)'"

Grokster Wins Big in Ninth Circuit (redux)

Grokster has won big in the 9th Circuit Court of Appeals. Read the decision: [PDF]. It is a very strong decision, basically bringing the Sony-Betamax decision into the modern age. Of course, the decision does make it clear that if Congress wants to change the law, they can (cough*INDUCE Act*cough). Read the whole thing, the actual opinion is only 18 single-column pages. See also, commentary from Jason Schultz, Ernest Miller, Cory Doctorow, and Ed Felten. And don't forget to thank EFF."

in honor of the decision, i am posting a paper i wrote in march on a very related subject. for thoes interested...

"It is Time to Compete with Free.pdf -This is a draft of paper I prepared for a Software and Internet Law class while completing my LLM in Entertainment and Mass Media Law. It gives a brief overview of the current problems and inconsistencies facing copyright law, particularly with respect to p2p systems. And further makes the case that economic competition with piracy is not only possible, but presents significant advantages over litigation and legislation at this point in time."

the update, first days at cambridge

ok kids here the update:

got in the other night and chilled in london. stayed at my very first hostel. interesting experience. the place was called the generator and it was near camden. it was like something out of some terry gilliam sifi. it was strait brazil. hung there met some nice kids, and austrailian girl who was visiting friends in brighten. and some kid from san diego who lives off the 163. very odd that last one. had a few pints, some absinth!!! and some dope curry. just kind of walked about, saw the theater district, the themes, the millenium wheele, big ben, parliment, downing street, westminster abby and the savoy all accidently and within about 30 minutes of wandering amelessly. pretty cool!!!

next day was off to cambridge, about an hour by train. nice town, super cool especially when you think about all the shit that went down here. i mean, dna discovered, the atom split, electrons uncovered, hawking, newton, gravity, blackholes, etc... all thought up on the local ale!!! which btw is prety dope, speckled hen, my new fave. hand pumped, room temp, the whole lot!

class is cool, the college is beautiful. kids are nice, first night went out drinking with a few. met some dudes on the wilco trip, several actullay. then met a girl who is dating laird's step brother, another who was telling me about a dope vivian westwood exhibit she just went to, a third who loves pavement and emo and another austrian girl who worked in the music biz in la and has gone back to school to be a lawyer. we talked tunes and geek toys for a few hours. even met some aspiring screenwriters. big big fun!

yeah i like it here. might have to stay a while.

U.S. Supreme Court: Public Anonymity No Right: "'Today the Supreme Court of the United States ruled that anybody can be compelled at any time to identify themselves, if a police officer asks. People who refuse to identify themselves, even if they are not suspected of a crime, will be arrested. Sound Orwellian? The Supreme Court also said people who are suspected of another crime might not be subject to arrest for not revealing their name. On this latter point, someone will have to bring a separate case. And the SCOTUS is at liberty not to hear any case it doesn't like. The case is Hiibel v. Sixth Judicial District Court of Nevada [pdf]. Previous Slashdot story here.'"

Private Space Shot a Success

Private Space Shot a Success: "The man at the controls called it 'a mind-blowing experience -- awesome.' But everyone who saw test pilot Mike Melvill become the world's first people's astronaut Monday was calling it history. Melvill flew SpaceShipOne, a rocket plane designed by iconoclastic aerospace pioneer Burt Rutan, to an unofficial altitude of 100 kilometers. The suborbital mission marked the first time a civilian pilot at the controls of a privately financed aircraft had crossed the threshold of space."

Q&A With MIT's Nicholas Negroponte

Q&A With MIT's Nicholas Negroponte: "Thought you might be interested in this interview between Nicholas Negroponte and BusinessWeek Online’s Steven Baker. In it, Nicholas says that peer-to-peer is his prediction as to which new products or services are likely to make the biggest splash, he says: Peer-to-peer is key. I mean that in every form conceivable: cell phones without towers, sharing leftover food, bartering, etc. Furthermore, you will see micro-wireless networks, where everyday devices become routers of messages that have nothing to do with themselves. Nature is pretty good at networks, self-organizing systems. By contrast, social systems are top-down and hierarchical, from which we draw the basic assumption that organization and order can only come from centralism. "
