Coral P2P Cache Enters Public Beta

Coral P2P Cache Enters Public Beta: "'infoAnarchy reports that Coral, a peer-to-peer webcaching system, has gone into public beta. Currently the Coral node network is hosted on Planet-Lab, a large scale distributed research network of 400 servers. You can use Coral right now by appending 'nyud.net:8090' to a hostname. View Slashdot through Coral. Is this the end of the Slashdot effect?'"

Universal3D vs. Real Open Standards

Universal3D vs. Real Open Standards: "'Back in April, Slashdot reported the announcement of a Universal 3D File Format by Intel, Microsoft & others - to be 'as open as MP3'. Of course, that's not all that open. And this turns out to be the sneaky part. There is a real open standard already - X3D is ISO-ratified, royalty-free, and has multiple open source implementations. U3D is 'going to be submitted to ISO' - one day - but right now they're talking to ECMA, which allows royalty-bearing patents. I found this article by Tony Parisi, co-chair of the X3D Working Group a fascinating insider's picture of the standards wars, along with insights into what it takes to release an online game, what really killed VRML, and why open standards do (and don't) matter. I mean, a royalty-bearing, pseudo-open universal 3D format from Intel and Microsoft? Sorry, guys. That trick doesn't work anymore ;)'"

Grokster Wins Big in Ninth Circuit (redux)

Grokster has won big in the 9th Circuit Court of Appeals. Read the decision: [PDF]. It is a very strong decision, basically bringing the Sony-Betamax decision into the modern age. Of course, the decision does make it clear that if Congress wants to change the law, they can (cough*INDUCE Act*cough). Read the whole thing, the actual opinion is only 18 single-column pages. See also, commentary from Jason Schultz, Ernest Miller, Cory Doctorow, and Ed Felten. And don't forget to thank EFF."

in honor of the decision, i am posting a paper i wrote in march on a very related subject. for thoes interested...

"It is Time to Compete with Free.pdf -This is a draft of paper I prepared for a Software and Internet Law class while completing my LLM in Entertainment and Mass Media Law. It gives a brief overview of the current problems and inconsistencies facing copyright law, particularly with respect to p2p systems. And further makes the case that economic competition with piracy is not only possible, but presents significant advantages over litigation and legislation at this point in time."

GMail

GMail Archives - Aimless Words: "So you have your GMail account but you need a little extra something. Perhaps you need a GMail import utility? Or possibly a GMail POP3 proxy program. Or maybe you are interested in turning Gmail into a file archival system? Within these pages I have collected links to all the GMail tools I have discovered in my daily web travels. It's a pretty big list."

WIKKID WIKKID WIKKID is what we say to the worlds most off his head MC BEZ and his SELCTOR SHAUN RYDER!!! Oi Oi Fukin' Oi!!! All i can say is i bez'd with Bez, quite literally! Got the up from the man, and as usual they offered a drink. I declined politely as his girl offered, Big Al took em up. He later passed a sip, sambuca. That makes two drinks i owe the mondays crew! Hopefully i get to pay my tab soon :) Anyway what a great night of tunes, little Zep, some Stones, some ska, bit of Chapterhouse, a dash of Roses, bit of the Charlatans, Primals Primals and more Primals, oh yeah and some Mondays with live vocals!!! But for that matter thay all had live vocals cause the crowd was just up for it! Nice one brotha!!!

yeah ok now back to our regularly schedualled prog...

bristol, nice town. nice markets. good skatespots. cool kids. by the water so all are happy. like that. seems to be a common trait in the costal cities. good afternoon walking through v town. big up full cycle crew!

next day brighton. uh, yeah, really nothing to say here, except that if i ever have to leave la for any period of time again, its to go to brighton! brighton is like the new ashland (for thoes who know)!!! it is so dope, fun, sun, amazing tunes all over the fucking place! i mean bbb, need i say more? got surf shops, despight lack of surf, nice skater kids, the lanes are beautiful, 99 on every block (dope soft serve w/ flake stuck in it), like melrose meets venice meets sf. just amazing! oh and lets not forget riki fukin tik! big up b! we made it for some long islands!!! yeah i am scouting flats next door ;)

back in the uk! praha is one of the moste wikkid cities i have ever been privileged enough to kick it in. nice crew, big up to all. the locals supper dope. and some of the most beautiful women i have ever seen. kicked it in gothic cathedrals, drank absinth on a boat in the shadow of the charles and castle. drank pilsner sitting on coble stones looking at cows, under the astrological clock contimplating how disney stole the castle in front of me, and listening to nice granola kids doing bad acoustic covers of nirvana. strange. and beautiful. golash and all. nice town. i wish words did it justice. you all must just go. also stay in the bolgarian prison if possible, it adds to the flavor :)

today landed, staying in hell. tomorrow, better diggs. tried to see ben watt. 0 for 2 on that. cherry and neighborhood, no dice but good adventure. club karma, 0 for three in the last week. hoping tomorrow we fair better.

tomorrow, i groove with BEZ AND MR. RYDER!!! HA LA LU YAH!!!!

day trip planed for bristol, next day brighton and riki tik (big up you self mr b)!

anyway, try to check in more later. and back to la the 8th.

oh bit i left out earlier so as not to scare the kids back home. just missed getting blown to shit by a granade in a mob hit. big al was trying to translate a creamfields poster for me. it was seeming to be a pain so we turned the corner to get some grub. 2 mins later while chowing at this food stand we hear a big bang. sounds kind of like a gun shot but not really. almost like something fell off a building. it was very odd. at first we thought it was just a normal thing, like maybe fireworks or something, but then five oh rolled around. next thing we know there are like police and officials everywhere. turns out some one threw a grenade at a casino mob boss trying to take him out. crazy thoes kids in prauge.

see ya real soon!!!
