There were no real robots at the time of course, so it was purely science-fiction. But I always believed a robot would be the most natural complement to the automobile - a full biped, intelligent version having great strength, dexterity and a library of mechanical knowledge. I imagined a robot with the ability to repair vehicles, direct traffic and watch over high-accident crossroads to preempt accidents."

Downhill Battle - Introduction

Downhill Battle : "is a music activism project that's working to bring positive change to the music industry. The discussion of technology and the future of music has recently been dominated by the major record labels and the RIAA, and we're working to introduce a public voice to the debate. Instead of asking 'what's good for major label CEOs and profit forecasts?' we want to ask 'what's good for music, musicians, and fans?' Above all, we think there is an incredible opportunity over the next few years to redefine the music industry by ending the monopoly of the five major labels."

PCWorld.com - Music Downloads Continue to Climb

PCWorld.com - Music Downloads Continue to Climb: "The number of U.S. music fans downloading music online increased by 27 percent between November 2003 and March 2004, research claims. Pew Internet & American Life Project ran a survey among 1371 Internet users to reach its estimates, which include users of file sharing networks (LimeWire, Kazaa) and legal services, such as Apple Computer's ITunes Music Store. Downloaders rose from 18 million to 23 million in the period. The researchers also found that 14 percent of 'online Americans' say they used to download files but don't now, with a third of that group saying this was in response to fear of legal action by the Recording Industry Association of America. 'The retreat is particularly pronounced among male Internet users between the ages of 18-29, and those who have broadband connections at home,' the researchers say. The survey also deduced a five-million person reduction in the number of Kazaa users, but also saw a rise in the number of users exploiting similar but smaller services."

A third of the former downloaders -- nearly 6 million -- say they stopped because of the highly publicized lawsuits filed by the recording industry since last summer against more than 1,000 users."

Slashdot | Lip Sync Problems with New Digital Displays?: "'With all of the new digital TV displays flying out the door, its easy to to think that life is good on the road to high definition. But, as Audioholics reports today, cheaper displays are using inexpensive processors that result in video delays of up to 60 milliseconds (that's about 2 frames of video). This means that the video processing (deinterlacing, video scaling, etc) delays the picture so that the audio is out of sync. Add to this inherent delays in some LCD and plasma units and the problem can be more than a little noticeable. As of right now only a few manufacturers are building audio lip-sync delay into their products to compensate.'"

While they lose some control over what they are downloading, it's a untraceable way to download music (no way for the RIAA to track users or sue). With some of the more powerful software that's been coming out recently, stream ripping has become more main-stream. Some of the more well known software packages, like StationRipper, allow users to download several thousand songs on a daily basis. And, depending on how you read the law, it's 100% legal. How will the RIAA respond? As more users move to this type of technology to avoid the P2P lawsuits, how will the music industry respond?'"

Donnie Darko: Hollywoodreporter.com: '' is getting a new theatrical release. Newmarket Films, which originally released the film, is unveiling a director's cut at the Seattle Film Festival on May 29. 'Darko' premiered at the 2001 Sundance Film Festival and was released in theaters that fall. The new version will have 20 minutes of never-before-seen footage, new visual effects, and new music. After the festival, Newmarket plans to release the film theatrically in Seattle before moving into other markets later in the summer. 'We felt like it was a project unfinished, and there is such a hungry audience for this movie,' said Newmarket partner Bob Berney. 'Darko' grossed just $515,545 at the domestic boxoffice but has since gained a following on DVD where it has grossed more than $10 million domestically. 'Even though I am proud of the theatrical version of the film, I've always felt that the story was somewhat compromised in order to come in under two hours,' said 'Darko' writer-director Richard Kelly. 'With this version I feel like I've finally been able to complete the film.'"

Hollywood's new lesson for campus file swappers | CNET News.com

Hollywood's new lesson for campus file swappers | CNET News.com: "Hollywood is poised to up the ante in its war against file swappers, with new technology that could make it easier to remove suspected pirates from campus networks, CNET News.com has learned. Movie studios, record labels and technology companies have been testing the system for months, according to sources familiar with the project. Known as the Automated Copyright Notice System (ACNS), the technology promises to make copyright enforcement easier on peer-to-peer networks, saving schools and Internet service providers (ISPs) time and money. ACNS allows them to automatically restrict or cut off Internet access for alleged infringers on notice from a record label or movie studio. For example, universities using ACNS could instantly send notices of copyright infringement to students by e-mail and restrict their network access until they have removed the file."

While its benefits are still years away from reaching the public, scientists hope nanotechnology -- the manipulation of atoms as raw materials -- will eventually live up to the hype it's received for its potential to advance medicine, electronics and manufacturing"

Slashdot | Gmail Commentary and Responses

Slashdot | Gmail Commentary and Responses: "'In his inimitable style, Tim O'Reilly tells us why GMail matters. The piece is entitled, 'The Fuss About GMail' but that doesn't begin to properly identify the real meat of what Tim's saying. Tim does discuss some of the privacy concerns on GMail and why he's not concerned, but he also breaks new ground on why GMail is not just another free email system. For example, Tim talks about how GMail might herald an era of large centralized computing and calls for APIs to allow GMail content to be move back and forth between it and other systems.' Reader chris mansley writes 'Google is quietly responding all the flak being given to their new email service. They have added a statement to quell the growing list of concerns. No more keeping email forever is at the top of the list. The reviews have been sparse on details and screenshots, but now Google is providing a sneak peek here and here.' The only thing I didn't like about Gmail was their apparent intention to keep your mail forever, regardless of your wishes. Since they've now clarified that they don't plan to do that, it doesn't seem like there's much of a problem any more. Yahoo and MSN already link your searches on their respective engines with your account profiles on their respective free email services, and no one seems to care (maybe because no one uses MSN or Yahoo as a search engine these days, but still)."

AT&T Wireless launches music recognition service Hollywoodreporter.com: "AT&T Wireless began offering its U.S. subscribers a service Thursday that uses mobile phones to identify the names and performers of more than 1 million popular songs. To use the music recognition service, users dial a three-digit code, then must hold their mobile phone for about 15 seconds near a speaker playing the tune that they want to identify. Moments later, the service sends a text message to the users' mobile phone indicating the title of the song and the name of the recording artist. The first search is free, each subsequent search costs 99 cents, plus standard airtime charges. Subscribers are not charged if the service fails to recognize a song. "

'He's in the neighborhood, but whatever meeting Rob wanted with Steve isn't happening,' Real spokesman Greg Chiemingo said Thursday. Opening Apple's iTunes DRM

Slashdot | BusinessWeek on Opening Apple's iTunes DRM: "'BusinessWeek is running a very interesting story on Apple's foray into music, with a different bent to everyone else's. BW suggests that, instead of opening the iPod up to the world, Apple should instead license its DRM - 'Fairplay' - to anyone who wants to start up a music store. The upside is obvious: it would mean that Apple's music format, AAC, would become ubiquitous; Apple could quite feasibly make money on licensing fees (say 1 cent per song sold); and, it would just happen to stick it to Microsoft and the Windows Media Format. As the iTunes Music Store isn't running at a profit (or forecast to make a big one), having the Music Store clones eat into Apple's existing market share wouldn't be a problem; all these stores would be doing is building a bigger potential market for the iPod.'"

couldn't have said it better myself. as a matter of fact i think that is exacly how i said it too!!!

also see:

Slashdot | Real Begs Apple for Alliance: ""In a an extremely forward move, CEO of Real Networks Rob Glaser has emailed Steve Jobs, imploring him to open up Apple's AAC Digital Rights Management System - FairPlay - to Real. The upside for Real - all music sold by them would be compatible with the iPod. The upside for Apple - Real would make the iPod its primary device for the RealNetworks store and for the RealPlayer software. However, Mr. Glaser wasn't just dangling carrots - he implied that should Apple not be a receptive partner for an alliance, he would be forced to look towards Microsoft. There was a similar post made not too long ago, with BusinessWeek's take on the whole thing." There's a Reuters story as well."

all i can say is if steve says yes this puts them in amazing position. it takes players #2 and #3 in codec/player biz and makes them a team. this in conjunction with picking up hp for hardware, player #2 in that world, makes apple's front a formidable opponent for any one. m$ included. steve please take the deal!!!

i have held my toung on this one too long. i will no longer.

1st in this country last i checked i have the freedom to contract. guess what, when someone signs up to use a service the sign a contract for the use of that service. if that contract lets google read my email, end of story. i had the freedom not to sign the contract and take my biz else where.

next, every and i mean every, isp, on line service of any kind keeps copies of what i send. i send, they rout, they cache and do many other things to ensure my info gets where its going. its not new or unique to google. yahoo, hotmail, roadrunner, etc, all keep copies. as do universities and i am sure the federal gov't when my stuff flies through their machines. it is a neccessity of doing business. the technology we use today demands it. it was designed to function this way so no one could ever stop the flow. and i for one feel pretty good about that.

further to suggest the destruction of the information once you are no longer engaged with the isp etc... is ludicris. how are they to go find every piece of data you have ever accessed, sent or stored. are all caching servers, routers or other like devices suposed to do this when you deciede today i will stop using the internet. excuse me may i have you attention, everyone please clear all record of my use now. stop what your doing and delete me. yes this sounds like an incredibly efficient idea, with no basis in reality what so ever.

what the fuck is going on here?

and what of spam filters, did people think they block spam without looking at it? how would the filter know if it was spam? if you fit in to this catagory i am very sorry. maybe you should get an education and stop bothering the rest of us. or better yet don't waste the resources just please top yourself quietly in the corner. thanks.

anyway its all just crazy that a company comes forth, tells you exactly what it is going to do, hiddes nothing, and is met by an overwhelming wave of complaint and now potentially legistaive action to block it. never mind that this activity has been going on for a great deal of time with other isps through the tech mentioned above. or that the activity is completely consentual. geez maybe we would feel beter if they just watched us ala carnavor style and didn't bother to tell us.

for any of the readers here who know me personally i love my privacy and one day aspire to be a blank. but this is just stoopid. i think i am gona stop wasting 1's and 0's now. oh btw Sen. Liz Figueroa, a Democrat from Fremont, Calif., fuck off!!!
